Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 20–30 m tall.

Stems: Bark grayish brown, subfibrous on trunk and larger branches, white to gray and smooth above.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate, sometimes opposite. Blades lanceolate, 7–13 cm long, 1.2–2.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate, usually uncinate. Blades discolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 17–25 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–7 in umbels arranged in terminal, compound inflorescences, peduncles 5–8 mm long, pedicels 3–5 mm long. buds ovoid, 3–4 mm long, 1–2 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit hemispherical; 1–2 mm long and wide; valves exserted. Seeds numerous.

Habitat: Planted and apparently regenerating on East Maui.
